Fictus
Source material: Caslon Old Face 12pt (Stephenson&Blake)
Spring semester 2025
Fictus is a bastard between the formal spirit of Stephenson & Blake's Caslon Old Face (12pt) and the brutalist thinking of Klim Type Foundry's Signifier. While trying to retain the key flavors of Caslon(high-contrast, big and round counters, the small eye of ‘e’, and many more), it acknowledges the act of digital type design as inherently a contradictory one—that vector-based forms forever exist as an ideal rather than an actuality. The idiosyncratic combination of the flat and triangular serif results from the weight compensation for the thinner part of the letters.
