Alternative Mediaeval is based on a typeface by a similar name, Alt-Mediaeval, designed by Max Hertwig and distributed by Berthold in 1914. Designed to set dense, inky blocks of body text, the typeface has enough idiosyncrasies to serve as an expressive display face.
