Record Gothic specimen, Ludlow, 1950–60s (Source: https://flic.kr/p/vpbxQr)
Originally from Ludlow, it started small as a copy of News Gothic, but later expanded to include twenty different styles. I was interested in drawing a sans-serif text typeface so that I can take a closer look at subtle details and develop a better understanding of nuances in type design and typography. Record Gothic Medium-Extended was intriguing as “it retained general family characteristics, but it also had much of the appearance of the new grotesques such as Helvetica which were beginning to come over from Europe.”*
