Borzoi Display
Source material: Various Hand drawn covers by W.A. Dwiggins
Spring semester 2021
This is a display typeface called Borzoi. This work is based on various hand drawn book covers by the prolific American type designer, W.A.Dwiggins. I was drawn to the surprising port optional relationship between the caps and lowercase glyphs as well as the complex angles of each counter. There is such drama and playfulness in the work for Dwiggins and I wanted to create something with the same free form nature. It was challenging to determine which of his quarks to preserve and what to standardize to create consistency. I kept the relationship of narrow lowercase to wide and round caps as well as the tight spacing and angled. Counters but I added weight and standardized the x heights. This project was so fun to work on and I feel I have just scratched the surface I would love to add onto this family and create more glyphs for this specific typeface.
