APPEAL
is a text weight revival serif-based font based on the characters used in David Walker’s Appeal in Four Articles to the Coloured Citizens of the World. Published in 1830, this document was a manifesto to challenge the conditions of humanity that Americans of color faced during those times. This charged writing featured typesetting that was meant to excite and incite as it was read through the use of spacings and punctuations, a real feat !!!!!!!!!!!!!! at the time for its intended audience. The original publishing was produced at a finished size of 6x9 inches for portability. At 87 pages, the writing featured a 7pt font size. It is likely that the booklet was printed in the same shop as Boston's Freedom's Journal, the first Black newspaper in the U.S., where Walker was a writer.
My goal in this project was to bring forward a body of characters that evoke heritage and culture while breathing life into the literary objects it embodies. The soul of the referenced publishing was penned with the urgency and fire for change. This is my intention as well.
