2743 Introduction to Typeface Design, Fall 2025

Debuting with the launch of the IBM Selectric in July 1961, Testimonial occupies a key position in the historical transition from monospace to proportional typewriter systems. The Selectric’s industrial design—conceived by architect and designer Eliot Noyes—reinforced this technological shift through a bold new aesthetic for office machinery. The typeface’s recent revival refines its forms without erasing the idiosyncratic character of the original design.

With its tall x-height, compressed descenders, and extended ascenders, the typeface strikes a balance between typographic regularity and unexpected characteristics.

Approaching to the end of the revival project, further digitization exploration is carried out as an experiment. In the process of typeface digitization, curvature is translated into pixel mosaics, compelling rounded letterforms to adhere to the constraints of the bitmap system, as a gesture to introduce the typeface into the computation era.
